I recommend this game if you've already played through the original Hatoful game. If you haven't, it would probably be better to finish that game first, as this one is not only a sequel, but it also contains spoilers in the radio section.

If you already have finished the original game: this game will answer a lot of questions (and ofc leave you with new ones), especially regarding Hitori's peculiar life. You'll also learn more about the birds' insecurities. You'll get to know a few new and fun characters, and also this time the gallery part is more interactive with way more pictures and also videos. You'll get a radio section which is just the birds answering questions from fans, but the Q&A sessions can be quite fun and also give you some answers. Also, there are 5 short stories you can unlock by completing the main story and unlocking achievents in Steam. Unfortunately, this game doesn't have that many multiple choice alternatives, but it's still an emotional and beautiful story I believe most Hatoful fans will enjoy!

+Original pigeon cast
+New pigeons
+Fun stories
+Short episodes with option of human portraits

-Very little user interaction; most episodes are just reads, or have 1-3 choices
-Continuity errors from the first game
-Short
-Little to no replay value

I loved Hatoful Boyfriend. I got every achievement, and enjoyed getting them. Some parts dragged, but overall it was incredibly enjoyable, which is why I bought Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star. I'll preface the rest of the review by saying this isn't a bad game. That being said, because there was so much user interaction in the first game, I expected the same here, and was sorely disappointed. I think had I gone into Holiday Star knowing it was mostly just stories to read, I would have appreciated it more, and I'm hoping that reviews like this one can keep other people from making the mistake I did.

My pet peeve in regards to sequels to games are continuity errors, and this one definitely has a few. Nothing game-breaking, just a couple things that, if you've played through all of Hatoful Boyfriend, you'll kind of pause and go "that doesn't seem right."

For me, because this is a primarily story-based game, it doesn't have any replay value. Once you've read the stories, you're not going to get anything else out of it. It's not like there are multiple endings like in Hatoful Boyfriend; unless you forget the stories, you're never going to have a need to reread them.

All of that being said, for what it is, Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star is an enjoyable game, and a fun sequel to Hatoful Boyfriend. It gives you an opportunity to interact with all of your favorite birbs again, and experience some fun and weird stories with them. If you really enjoyed Hatoful Boyfriend and if you really like visual novels, then Holiday Star is the game for you.

There's only one question you should ask yourself before buying this game: did you enjoy Hatoful Boyfriend? If so, buy it immediatly: it's way shorter and has no branching routes, but all the cast you grew attached to is back (with some nice new characters) and it's full of high quality fan-service (I know it sounds like an oxymoron...). The advantage of not having branching routes is that contrary to the first one, you're playing many short stories instead of playing the same story over and over again with every birds (apart from the BBL route, that is). Also, there is a lot of meta humor. Awesome.

If you didn't play the first one, then 1) what are you doing on this store page? This game will be of no interest to you and 2) GO PLAY THE FIRST ONE IT'S A MASTERPIECE, AND I DON'T SAY THAT LIGHTLY!!!!

Maybe you just didn't enjoy the first one. Then let me repeat myself: 1) What are you doing on this story page? and 2) GO PLAY THE FIRST ONE AGAIN UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND HOW OF A MASTERPIECE IT IS (and if you don't succeed, then I'm sorry to bring it up to you but you have bad taste and/or bad judgment).

Mooooore biiiirbs, soooo maaany birbs!! Playing the first Hatoful Boyfriend game left me hungry for more saxy birdie time, and it was certainly given!!!! Shuu and Nageki were still as fabulous and adorable as ever. And playing this has left me wanting yet ANOTHER game. So now I must sit and wait in confidence that there shall be more Hatoful Boyfriend and my obsession with Shuu and adoration for Nageki will be fuelled!!! ILY BIRBIES

I was expecting a lighthearted and fun christmas-themed sequel to Hatoful Boyfriend with plenty of silly scenarios or something along those lines. In the start the game seemed to go that direction, but soon I was to witness how utterly wrong I was to think that.
The game adresses themes I'd never imagined initally. It starts somewhat silly and as the plot unravels things get very serious and heartwrenching. I ended up completing the game in one sitting and was quite impressed how yet another Hatoful game suddenly went DEEP.

I highly recommend to play the original game first as this builds upon characters already established in the prior game.
It is a standalone story, but the experience might be lacking if you're not familiar with the universe.

10/10 much feels.

Pros:
  • Seeing more of your favorite bird husbandos
  • More birds to meet
  • Will still make you cry

Cons:
  • Less polished than the first game
  • Choices are either a game over or progression and unless you saved recently, you have to fast-forward for a LONG time

I personally still really enjoyed it, even with some complaints. I definitely believe you should play the first game first.
I recommend it, but probably on a sale.

Finally a christmas game that recognizes the timeless christmas tradition of mowing down large buildings with a tank.

I loved this, but would not recommend unless you've played the first game, and know the material to some extent beforehand. Though you don't really need to have done the BBL route to play this.

This has a really interesting format, in that playing different sections unlocks more sections and sort of mini-bonus stories. But there's not as much choice as there was in the first game, and where you do have a choice... picking the wrong one usually just results in a game over, rather than something interesting. You'll usually get a bit of funny dialogue for your trouble though.

Holiday Star: "...we must not miss the train. We cross the glowing river. We follow the obsidian map into the world of shadows."

For the ones who already played Hatoful Boyfriend, enjoyed it through its genuine absurdity and mind-wrecking revelation that takes place during the BBL route, Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star is the collection of some side stories hailing from an alternative universe where BBL route never took place. The game serves to be both some ridiculous fan service and some fourth wall breaking story interaction. For the ones who are yet to play the original game: drop this supplement and play Hatoful Boyfriend immediately to avoid spoilers!

In the Holiday Star continuation, the shocking yet gruesome BBL route never occurred. All students of St. Pigeonations live happily and obliviously, approaching the end of yet another school year. Here around this time, we observe a series of short side stories from our usual heroes' daily encounters that will enrich both character backgrounds and answer some questions unanswered in the original game. Aside a handful of irrelevant comical situations Holiday Star also includes one genuine storyline which would foreshadow the events of BBL route and introduce unnerving new characters: The Day the Night Slept. Even for that story alone, you are in for a treat everybirdie!

Gameplay is not that different from the original. You are Hiyoko Tosaka, the young human girl who attends St. Pigeonations alongside her bird class mates and teachers who will witness casual - and not so casual - random ongoing in and about the school. This time, gameplay is fairly straight forward with little to no choice options at all. As I described before, Holiday Star is more of a supplement to the original rather than a stand-alone game. It consists of 4 storylines, 6 short chapters and a fairly interesting radio program section where Ryouta will answer fan mails.

It's cute and short - aside The Day the Night Sleeps storyline, which is heart and mind-wrecking as expected from any game coming from Hatoful universe. I sincerely recommend the experience to the fans of the series, and the ones who'd still have some questions within their minds after completing BBL route.
